You Can Trust The Communists

They told us they’d free us from work:
The labourer, artisan, clerk.
“You’ll all of us share in our perk,
Yes, you can trust the communists.”

They told us all women and men
Would be equal, and glory amen!
“There’ll never be hunger again.
Yes, you can trust the communists.”

They told us we’d have Paradise
If we’d make but a small sacrifice,
“Hark to us and heed our advice,
For you can trust the communists.”

They told us the serf would be free,
They’d bring us a true liberty,
“Believe us!” We followed with glee,
For you can trust the communists.

We followed them like we were sheep,
Until we were in, and in deep,
And now it appears that we’ll reap
The price of naïvete and folly.

The Tsar wasn’t such a bad bloke,
Although we were chained to his yoke,
We were never so pitiful broke
As today, now we’re all of us sorry.

Big Brother will watch over you,
And ev-e-rything that you do.
“To the Party and State you’ll be true.”
Yes, you can trust the communists.
To be communists!
