January 4, 1951: This is another amusing case from Australia, not because of the false allegation but because of what happened afterwards.
Mrs Violet Jean Anna Fortnum-Neale is arrested for drunkenness, and is taken to a police station at Port Melbourne. She claims to have been raped therein by a police officer, John William Shelley, who is promptly arrested by Inspector Stanley Ewart. Ewart puts him in a line-up at 5am the next day. The accuser admits she lied, and Shelley brings a civil action against the Inspector for assault and false imprisonment - which he wins. Ewart said he did not see anything unusual about the allegation, and appears to have believed the woman uncritically. That must have made him incredibly popular with his colleagues!
