Garfoot v Walker

Late 1996: Lynn Walker worked alongside Michael Garfoot. She claimed he had put his hand up her skirt. In January 1997, after he was suspended, she claimed he had almost raped her. His employer lifted the suspension and moved him to another branch, but when her allegations continued, he sued her for libel and slander. In court, these allegations became actual rape, oral rape and more. The CCTV evidence and all the other evidence indicated otherwise.

It is understandable why she never took these claims to the police - assuming she was sane - but on February 7, 2000, after an eight day trial at the High Court in Newcastle, Mr Garfoot won the case, and 400,000 damages.

This BBC report includes photographs of both parties. Although even the most demented of their ilk were unable to challenge the verdict, it goes without saying that many members of the sisterhood were unhappy with the quantum of damages awarded to this totally innocent and vindicated man.

[For the avoidance of doubt, the above Michael Garfoot is not the (much younger) Michael Garfoot who was convicted of sexually assaulting a 13 year old girl in 2012].
