June 28, 1979: Steven McCarthy picks up a young woman, takes her to a bar, a restaurant a liquor store, a nightclub, and then to the beach where they have sex. On the drive back to Providence, Rhode Island, he is stopped for speeding. His companion gets out of the van and claims he had just raped her. In March 1980, he is convicted of rape and kidnapping, but unusually is granted bail pending an appeal.

On June 15, 1982, the Supreme Court of Rhode Island quashes his convictions and orders a retrial. After accusing him of rape his companion had gone on to accuse another man, and then withdraw the allegation. The trial judge had refused to allow this in evidence.

It beggars belief to think this woman was raped twice in quick succession by two different men.
