Steal my good name, but spare my purse:
Though infamy’s bad, hunger’s worse,
Make me a rogue but not a tramp:
A prison’s dry, a bench is damp.

Make me dishonest, not a fool:
A fool’s a cur, a trickster’s cool;
Give me sadness, not poverty:
The rich enjoy their misery.
