Spirals

(i)

These are the very few;
They start from nowhere and rise exponentially.

Though they may appear to decelerate,
the areas contained within increase forever.

These are the very few,
These are the lucky ones.

(ii)

These are the many;
They start from a fixed point and wind in against themselves;
All the time: down, down,
To a singularity,
A nothingness.

They appear always to make good progress,
But the reality is that they move more and more slowly,
And all such movement is, in any case,
Retrograde.

These are the many,
The very many,
The unlucky ones...
The Damned.

Spirals was first published in magazing 7, August 1986. Alex Baron indeed.
